Getting Married in Fiji

THE APPLICATION

People wishing to be married in Fiji are required to present the following documents:

  1. Original copy of birth certificate
  2. Passport; check visitors permit if valid otherwise obtain approval letter from Immigration Department
  3. Decree Absolute document if divorced
  4. Death Certificate if spouse is deceased
  5. Statutory Declaration signed by a Justice of Peace or Notary Public or Solicitor to prove that the persons are not married (this declaration applies to first or subsequent marriage) or confirmation letter from the Marriage Registry where the applicant resides that he/she has not registered a marriage. Statutory Declaration – Both New Zealand and Fiji forms are acceptable.
  6. Consent of the father/mother if under the age of 21 years. For marriages in Fiji females need to be 16 years and above and males need to be 18 years and above.
  7. Names of two witnesses who are 21 years of age or over.


REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE

After the marriage ceremony, couples must ensure that the marriage is registered at the Registrar General's Office in Suva.

MARRIAGE FEES

The current marriage fees (vat inclusive) are tabled in Fiji Currency.

Application for Special License: F$19.80
Marriage performed in the Registrar General's Office: F$22.00
Marriage performed by the Registrar General or District Registrar outside office:F$30.00

Marriage Certificate

To obtain a marriage certificate, the following is required:
  1. Duly completed application form
  2. Fees of NZ $10.00
  3. Self addressed pre paid envelope or courier bag


It takes approximately 6-8 weeks to process. However processing time can vary depending on individual cases.

Correction Of Error In Register Of Marriage Certificate

To obtain correction of error in register of marriage certificate, the following should be submitted:

  1. Completed application form stating the error.
  2. Fees of NZ$15.00.
  3. Self addressed pre paid envelope or courier bag
