Living and Working in Fiji

Working in Fiji can be a very memorable experience. One can enjoy the same things that attract tourists to Fiji, such as the warm climate that allows outdoor activities all year round; blue skies and sandy beaches; friendly nature of the people and the variety of cultures.

As part of the preparation for moving to Fiji, it is advisable to check on the following:
Immigration requirements – work permit, residence permit, student permit;
Customs/Border regulations – duties on personal goods to be taken to Fiji, quarantine requirements for pets, plants and animal products.
It is also advisable to arrange schools for the children beforehand and get advice on the choice of schools from employers, the Ministry of Education or other reliable contacts. About 99 % of schools in Fiji operate on a central curriculum and most schools are owned and run by non-government organisations. Except for the International Schools, Schools operate on three terms of fourteen weeks each with the school year normally beginning about the second last week of January. Usually children of expatriates attend the International School. For more information please visit the international school website: www.international.school.fj and the Ministry of Education government website: www.Fiji.gov.fj

Fiji has a well-developed medical service with public hospitals in all major centres as well as a private hospital in Suva. There are also a large number of private medical practitioners to choose from in these centres.

The comforts of modern living can be enjoyed in Fiji at comparatively reasonable costs. While tropical fruits, vegetables and local foods are in abundant supply, well known New Zealand brands and favourites are also available. Fiji is a shopper's paradise especially with duty free retailing. Bargaining is acceptable in most shops.
